From Generative AI to Wearable Plant Sensors: New Report Lists Top 10 Emerging Technologies for 2023

The top 10 in the report were selected by a group of experts based on several criteria.

New Delhi:

Wearable plant sensors, sustainable aviation fuel and generative artificial intelligence are among the top 10 emerging technologies for 2023, according to a new World Economic Forum report.

The report assesses “how each technology impacts people, the planet, prosperity, industry and equity” and describes flexible batteries (made from lightweight materials that can be twisted, bent and stretched). ), spatial omics (see “Biological processes at the molecular level in cells”), and flexible neural electronics (brain-machine interfaces that allow direct communication between the brain and external computers. It is among the top 10 technologies expected to have the greatest impact on the world in 3-5 years.)

The report describes generative AI as a new type of AI that can generate new and original content by learning from large datasets. This AI was introduced into public conversations in one fell swoop with the general availability of ChatGPT at the end of 2022.

“Rapidly evolving generative AI will disrupt multiple industries with applications in education, research and other areas,” said the report.

Sustainable aviation fuels are produced from biotic sources (such as biomass) and abiotic sources (such as CO2). The report says this could be the answer to decarbonizing the airline industry in the short to medium term.

Wearable plant sensors are small, non-invasive devices that can be “worn” to individual plants to continuously monitor temperature, humidity, moisture and nutrient levels.

The list also includes “designer phages” (viruses that selectively infect certain types of bacteria), metaverse for mental health (a shared virtual space to improve mental health), sustainable computing (liquid-cooled systems, AI analytics, and modular data centers) are also mentioned. These include 10 technologies showing the most promise, such as methane flares (which can be moved to net-zero energy data centers alongside existing energy sources such as methane flares), and AI-powered medicine.

Produced in partnership with Frontiers, a publisher of peer-reviewed open-access scientific journals, the top 10 rankings in this report were selected by a group of experts based on several criteria.

The report states that “in addition to promising significant benefits to society and the economy, it must also be disruptive and attractive to investors and researchers, and to reach a sizeable scale within five years. It is expected to reach

“Since its first edition in 2011, the report has identified lesser-known technologies that have continued to have a global impact. It also includes genomic vaccines, the technology that underpins coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccines.” AI-driven molecular design, 2018 list two years before the first AI-discovered drug enters clinical trials.
