The first attempt to use AI to examine the effectiveness of regenerative agriculture in potato production will be in the UK.

The project, led by a pioneer crop of agricultural AI and funded by a grant of 700,000 euros (£605,000) from the EU's EIT Food Innovation Agency, is considered to be the first to apply “big data” to regeneration practices.

Using real-time field data, computer models, predictive analytics, satellite images and sensors, we investigate whether practices such as fertilizer reduction and cover crops can increase yield and dry matter content and reduce water use.

“As regenerative agriculture gains momentum, the lack of verifiable and measurable results poses a real challenge to meaningful and scalable impacts,” said Krishna Kumar, CEO and founder of CRISHNA KUMAR.

According to the company, processors require potatoes with high dry matter content, and although Regen Practice can meet these requirements, evidence suggests that it can drop early in the transition.

“Without robust digital systems, farmers have a hard time maintaining the principles of regeneration consistently. Through AI, data intelligence and real-time decision support, we are filling this critical gap and bringing accuracy, accountability and measure to regenerative agriculture,” Kumar said.

Initially, scientific verification will be carried out on a Danish farm in collaboration with the University of Aarfs, along with the first commercial pilot of the British potato processor. In Germany, the second pilot follows.
