The Harris campaign blamed Musk for the video.
“We believe what the American people want is the real freedom, opportunity and security that VP Harris is providing, not the false, manipulated lies of Elon Musk and Donald Trump,” campaign spokeswoman Mia Ellenberg said in an email.
California Governor Gavin Newsom (Democrat) Governor Gavin Newsom also condemned the post, saying it should be illegal to manipulate people's voices like the one in the video, and said he plans to “sign legislation in the coming weeks that will ensure that this is illegal.”
Fellow Californians, Congressman Barbara Lee (Democrat)on Monday similarly denounced deepfake videos, arguing they show the technology needs guardrails.
“Not only is it unpleasant, but it shows how dangerous it can be. [Musk] “How dangerous it is for social media to not have guardrails,” Lee said, “and as we look at AI and move forward, we need to make sure that there are regulatory guardrails and rules that AI has to follow.”
