More than 200 child advocacy groups and experts have written to Google CEO Sundar Pichai and YouTube CEO Neil Mohan, asking them to ban AI-generated videos from YouTube’s children’s platform. The demand comes amid growing concerns about the impact of such content on young viewers. The letter, sponsored by advocacy group Fairplay, argues that these videos are of low quality and designed to attract attention while also generating significant revenue. Signatories include leading organizations and researchers who say stronger action is needed to protect children online.
Organizations raise concerns about AI content
In a letter, the group said AI-generated videos have a negative impact on children’s development and should not be allowed on platforms designed for youth. They argued that such content can cause confusion and influence the way children understand the world.“AI-generated videos are really just an escalation of the myriad problems YouTube already has when interacting with children on its platform,” Fairplay’s Rachel Franz said. She added: “It’s important to address this AI slop phenomenon and impose on YouTube the way its platform is designed.”
What is AI Slop?
The term “AI slop” refers to mass-produced videos created using artificial intelligence, often featuring repetitive or unclear content aimed at grabbing the viewer’s attention. The groups called on YouTube to ban AI-generated content from YouTube Kids and limit its reach across the main platform. We also need clearer labels for AI content and parental controls.According to the letter, some AI-focused channels targeting children are generating millions of dollars in revenue, raising concerns about the financial incentives behind such content.
YouTube responds to concerns
A YouTube spokesperson said the platform has “high standards” for content on YouTube Kids, and AI-generated material is limited to selected channels. The company said it is also working on improving the labeling of AI content. The issue comes as regulators and experts continue to examine the impact of artificial intelligence on online platforms used by children.
