EbonyLife Group founder Mo Abudu has warned of the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) by cybercriminals impersonating celebrities in financial fraud.
In a formal disclaimer issued Thursday, the media mogul distanced herself from a viral video circulating on social media that used deepfake technology to replicate her voice and appearance. The scam video, traced back to a Facebook organization identified as “Naija Capital Growth,” falsely depicts Abudu promoting an investment scheme that promises Nigerians ₦700,000 in profits per day.
Abdu clarified that the fraudsters manipulated the original footage of her interview at the Forbes 30/50 Summit in Abu Dhabi in March 2023 to mislead the public. She stressed that the initial conversation was strictly centered around African storytelling and media representation and had nothing to do with finance or capital growth projects.
“I have never asked anyone for money and I would never ask for money in this way or manner. This video is completely fake and misleading,” she said.
She called on the public to be wary of the evolving tactics of digital criminals who exploit the reputations of established leaders to organize fraudulent activities.
