The use of artificial intelligence (AI) tends to help Brazilian mining companies better manage the risks associated with tail dams. This is a sensitive domestic issue.

Managing tailing dam risk is a particularly sensitive topic in Brazil, and follows two major disasters in Minas Gerais. In 2015, the dam, run by Samar Cominellachan, a joint venture between Veil and BHP, collapsed. And in 2019, the Brumadinho Dam, run by Veil, collapsed, causing environmental damage and hundreds of deaths.
Since these tragedies, regulators have stepped up surveillance on the dam.
However, the effectiveness of monitoring is often called into question due to the budget constraints facing watchdogs.
