Microsoft has begun testing new AI-powered features in Microsoft Photos, designed to automatically classify photos on Windows 11 systems.
Currently known as automatic classification, it is limited to sorting screenshots, receipts, identity documents, and memos, and has been deployed on Copilot+ PCs on all Windows Insider Channels since Microsoft Photos version 2025.11090.25001.0.
Microsoft said the feature utilizes a language-independent AI model that identifies document types, regardless of the language used in the image. It works by automatically grouping photos into predefined folders based on visual content, such as handwritten notes, receipts, and printed documents.
The Photos app helps users instantly find categorized images to quickly find them using categories in the left navigation sidebar or search bar. Users can also manually change categories or “provide feedback to improve accuracy.”
“This release brings powerful new features to Copilot+ PCS, which uses AI to organize photos into categories to organize them,” said Ronnie Myers, senior product manager at Microsoft, in a blog post Friday.
“Auto-category automatically detects photo collections and organizes them into meaningful categories such as screenshots, receipts, identity documents, and AI. It's designed to save time, reduce clutter and make it easy to navigate your photo library.”
BleepingComputer contacted a Microsoft spokesman and asked if this AI feature would send information to Microsoft's servers or use a local AI model, but was unable to respond immediately.
Today, the company has begun rolling out super-resolutions for AMD and Intel Copilot+ PCS. This is an AI-equipped feature that enhances and enlarges images up to 8 times the original size.
In March, Redmond added a co-official button to the top of the photo viewer to provide editing tips and framing suggestions.
A few months later, in June, Windows 11 insiders with Copilot+ PCS also began testing improved photo search capabilities with natural language and playback. This is the ability to add dynamic lighting control to the image.
To expand Copilot reach to more users, Microsoft will test new AI features in Windows 11 File Explorer, deploy Copilot Chat in office applications for business customers in Microsoft 365 using paid plans, and automatically install the Microsoft 365 Copilot app on Windows devices outside the EEA region that has the Microsoft 365 Deshtop client app.
Recently, Redmond has begun deploying AI-powered Gaming Copilot to select Windows 11 systems, and announced that Notepad is getting free AI-powered text writing capabilities on Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs.
