We all know how aggressive Microsoft is when pushing Windows updates. You can rush to send a work email or start a game with the boys, but as soon as you turn on your PC, the Windows Update screen appears. Well, it looks like Microsoft is taking things to the next level and forcing your Windows device to update even if you weren’t planning on updating it yourself.

Currently, this forced update applies to users of the Home and Pro versions, but IT departments and organizations are currently excluded from the rollout.

Microsoft claims that you “don’t need to do anything” to get the update, but you have limited control over when updates are installed. You can also postpone the update, but of course, that functionality is only temporary. What’s interesting is that Microsoft calls this a “machine learning-based intelligent rollout,” but there’s no explanation as to what that means.

The rationale behind forced updates is very logical. Windows 11 version 24H2 reaches end of support on October 13, 2026, so Microsoft is updating all remaining systems to the new version 25H2. This streamlines future updates and allows Microsoft to focus on improving one version instead of allocating resources to legacy support. However, forcing users to update against their will is questionable to say the least, and raises concerns about user autonomy and privacy.
