Microsoft is preparing a version of the Copilot AI tool for the Pentagon.
“In the case of a DOD environment, Microsoft 365 Copilot is expected to be available earlier than in the summer of 2025,” the company said in a recent blog written for government customers. “Work is currently underway to ensure that it meets the security and compliance standards that it needs to be delivered.”
Copilot is Microsoft's main generation AI product. The company has developed several co-pilot tools. It leverages AI models to automate various tasks and support human employees. Copilot, Microsoft's 365 service, works across productivity software such as PowerPoint slides, Excel spreadsheets, and word documents.
Microsoft has invested heavily in building these new products, but still tries to find the best way to make money from them. If the Pentagon signs co-pilot services, it would be a big win for the tech giant.

Although Althoff has not disclosed any customers and Microsoft declined to comment, there will be only a few customers with a workforce large enough to justify adding more than one million co-committee seats.
The Department of Defense is one such customer. According to a 2023 report by the Government's Office of Accountability, it is one of the largest employers in the United States, with around 2.1 million service members and around 770,000 private employees. Pentagram did not respond to requests for comment.
Microsoft has publicly stated its plans to add Copilot to the version of its Microsoft 365 suite application for large government customers this year.
The Microsoft website says that Microsoft 365 Copilot is currently unavailable via GCC-High, a high-security cloud platform for US government employees. However, in an update on March 31, the company said it plans to add co-pilots to these environments soon this summer.
“For GCC High organizations, Microsoft 365 Copilot remains in development to meet security and compliance requirements,” the company explained. “We are planning a general availability (GA) to be released this calendar year.”
