Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleiman wants his team to follow “strict” office working rules. He wants an in-person working culture where the requirements for working in an office are more stringent than the standards for other departments within the company. In an interview with Business Insider, Suleiman revealed that he prefers this structure, saying it focuses on focusing his team’s efforts. “I’m a big believer in an in-person work culture. We’ve worked to defragment and focus our culture.” Suleiman also emphasized that his team often favors open floor plans, a workplace concept that can be divisive at Microsoft and across the engineering community.

Microsoft recently introduced a new return-to-office policy that requires most employees to work in the office at least three days a week starting January 26th. However, internal documents reviewed by Business Insider show that Suleiman requires team members who live near the office to work at least four days a week. All exceptions must be approved by your immediate executive. Suleiman also said he doesn’t like traditional offices behind closed doors. One of his setups uses “neighborhoods” with 20 to 30 open desks placed near each other.
“It’s much better for collaboration. Everyone can see everyone else participating. You can feel the energy, there’s a real heat to the place, and it creates a lot more things, like informal collaboration. It’s much better.” Mr. Suleiman pointed out:AI executives also spend significant time in Silicon Valley. Suleiman splits his schedule between Silicon Valley and Seattle. He said most of the team is based in Silicon Valley rather than Microsoft’s Redmond headquarters.“There’s a tremendous density of talent here. This is the perfect place.” he added.Microsoft is empowering individual organizations or teams to determine their return-to-office plans and office layouts. For example, the report claims that corporate, external and legal teams have been working in the office at least four days a week for about a year.Other AI-focused teams follow more flexible practices. Scott Guthrie’s Cloud + AI organization doesn’t have specific guidelines for returning to the office. Jay Parikh’s Core AI group will adopt a three-day-a-week schedule starting in February for all offices except GitHub, the report claims, citing internal documents.
