If you have an account connected to Meta AI, you will see ads immediately based on your search in the AI bot. Starting December 16, the company announced that it will use data from user conversations and activities in Meta's AI products, including chatbots and virtual assistants, to feed into a system for personalized advertising. According to Meta, this data allows you to determine which ads, posts and content will be displayed on your users' Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. This update affects more than billions of users each month involved in Meta AI.
META's official notification says this new policy of personalized ads based on Meta AI search will begin landing in users' inboxes and apps on October 7th, providing weeks of advance warnings before enforcement. Meta says the change is intended to create recommendations and relate ads to individual interests, but details shared with Meta AI can directly shape what appears in the feed.
The company describes the update as a way to improve advertising efficiency and relevance. For example, if a user chats about hiking with Meta AI, Facebook can later recommend local trail groups, highlight posts about outdoor activities, and display ads for hiking gear. “We're also using Meta AI and other AI features to improve the experience across all platforms,” Meta said in a newsroom update.
Meta's new ad policy rollout
The new rules don't apply anywhere from the start. At the start, the UK, European Union countries and South Korea are excluded, but regulatory approvals are being addressed. Elsewhere, there is no opt-out option other than circumventing Meta's AI capabilities completely, and changes will be automatically applied.
What about privacy?
Meta has confirmed that chat data from AI interactions moves freely between services. For example, a conversation on Instagram can affect ad targeting on Facebook or WhatsApp if your account is linked. It includes both text and audio exchanges, including those made with messenger and one-to-one chat. However, encrypted messages are not affected by updates.
There are several boundaries in how this data is used. Meta says conversations that include sensitive topics such as religion, health, sexual orientation, political affiliation, and union members do not apply to advertising or recommendations.
However, it should be noted that the scope of the policy remains broad. From hobbies to lifestyle interests, daily chat themes feed the Meta personalization engine.
Can I disable the use of AI data?
no. Users can adjust their account privacy settings, but for now there is no option to specifically disable the use of AI chat data, except that it completely avoids Meta's AI capabilities.
