Meta-layoffs hit Reality Labs and recruiting departments

AI For Business

Some Meta employees announced Wednesday that they have been laid off as Meta continues its full focus on AI.

Several employees who worked in Reality Labs and the recruiting department announced on LinkedIn that their roles were being eliminated. The scale of the cuts was not immediately known.

Meta did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s request for comment.

Earlier this month, Meta asked some managers to create cost-cutting plans, two senior employees previously told Business Insider. Some Meta employees in the company’s wearables and advertising division received messages on Tuesday directing them to work from home on Wednesday, according to two people briefed on the matter.

Reuters first reported earlier this month that the company was considering job cuts. Cost savings come as Meta pours hundreds of billions of dollars into building AI infrastructure and a team of AI talent. We are also promoting the use of AI within our company.

Meta’s chief technology officer, Andrew Bosworth, told staff on Tuesday that the company will carry on the company’s “AI for Work” initiative, an effort to increase the adoption of AI tools within the company, according to a memo seen by Business Insider and first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

“Like many of you, I am fascinated by the power of AI to transform companies and am eager to unlock the power of AI for individuals and teams,” Boz wrote in the memo.

The job cuts also come as some of the company’s top executives are set to receive significant pay increases in connection with the company’s “very aggressive” share price over five years.

The latest layoffs in the company’s reality lab and recruiting departments were first reported by The Information.

Major tech companies continue to cut staff

Since 2023, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been pushing for greater efficiency at the company, with layoffs and cost-cutting becoming a widespread trend across Big Tech companies in recent years.

Amazon announced in January that it would cut about 16,000 corporate roles, months after cutting 14,000 corporate roles. Microsoft said last year that it would lose Approximately 15,000 positions.

Recently, more and more companies are mentioning AI when announcing job cuts, such as Atlassian’s 10% layoff and Block’s nearly 50% layoff. According to a March report from Challenger, Gray & Christmas, AI has been cited in 12,304 (8%) layoff announcements so far in 2026.

Meta’s stock price has fallen nearly 9% this year and more than 5% in the past 12 months.
