What’s the story?
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has confirmed that it is testing a standalone app for Vibes functionality. This news comes as part of an effort to build on Vibes’ initial success within the Meta AI app. Launched last September, Vibes allows users to create short-form AI-generated videos and share them in a dedicated feed.
What is the vibes function?
Unlike TikTok and Instagram Reels, all videos on the Vibes platform are generated by AI. This feature was previously part of the Meta AI app, but is currently being tested as a standalone app. The move is seen as a direct competitor to Sora, OpenAI’s AI-generated video and social app, which launched shortly after Vibes.
Meta confirms standalone app testing
by email to tech crunchMeta said, “Following the strong early traction of Vibes within Meta AI, we are testing a standalone app to further build on that momentum.” The company also noted that more users are using the format to create and share AI-generated videos with friends. The new app provides a dedicated space for this experience, providing users with a more immersive environment.
Why a standalone app?
Although Meta did not provide specific numbers, the company claims that Vibes is doing well. Meta AI usage has also steadily increased since its launch, demonstrating the demand for standalone apps. The tech giant also highlighted that while users consume content with meta AI, the standalone app provides an experience more focused on creation and engagement.
How do I use the vibrate feature?
The Vibes app allows users to create videos from scratch or remix existing videos on their feed. Add new visuals, music, and style before posting. The final product can be shared on your Vibes feed, sent via direct message (DM), or cross-posted to your Instagram or Facebook Stories/Reels. Meta plans to test a subscription model for AI features such as Vibes in the coming months.
