Meta previewed upcoming features to video editing app Edits. The software, which was previously only available on mobile devices, will now have a desktop version and an AI assistant, according to TechCrunch.

The app was launched last year as a direct competitor to ByteDance’s CapCut, and the planned additions are expected to help Meta retain existing users while attracting new ones.

The new AI assistant generates content ideas and analyzes insights from Instagram data like video views and audience retention metrics to help creators understand what works best and why.

By integrating AI directly into Edits, Meta keeps creators within the Instagram ecosystem, reducing dependence on third-party tools like ChatGPT and encouraging more frequent content creation. Similar features are already available from competitors, with YouTube offering an “Inspiration” tab that displays ideas generated by AI, and TikTok offering tools for trend analysis and content generation.

Meanwhile, the desktop version of Edits allows users to edit videos on a larger screen and handle more complex editing workflows. The company says users will be able to seamlessly sync their projects between mobile devices and PCs. This update will also increase competition from CapCut, which already offers a full-fledged desktop client.

In addition, Edits introduced a beta tab that offers experimental features, enhanced audience analytics including demographics and peak activity times, and topic search in the Inspiration section that allows users to discover trending videos and templates from other creators. Users can also create multiple versions of the same video to test performance before publishing.

According to Meta, content created with Edits has a 10% higher save rate and is 2% more likely to be shared than content created without Edits, and more than half of Instagram Reels users view content generated with Edits every day.

The Edits app is currently available for free download on iOS and Android, with a PC version coming soon.
