Maui County Treasurer Scott Teruya has been appointed to serve on a national commission of inquiry to explore how artificial intelligence could help local governments.
According to a Maui County news release, the Artificial Intelligence Review Board, established by the National County Association, will explore new policies, practices, potential applications and consequences of AI. The 15 Commission members, representing elected and appointed county officials from around the country, are responsible for county governance policies and practices, voter operations and services, public trust, privacy and security issues, employee productivity and Focus on skill development research.
“I am excited to be a part of this committee that will help not only Maui County, but other counties across the country, as the government explores the potential of using artificial intelligence to more effectively serve its residents. I am very happy.” Teruya has served as Maui County Treasurer since 2019 after serving as the county’s real estate tax administrator for 11 years.
The Commission also plans to develop a policy and practice toolkit with sample guidelines and standards on AI, as well as advise the NACo on public policy issues and promote educational opportunities.
The committee is scheduled to meet at the NACo’s annual meeting on July 22nd, and will meet in person and virtually as work progresses.
Teruya was appointed last month to serve on the NACo Board of Directors for a two-year term on behalf of the International Association of Evaluators, and was awarded the title of Evaluation Management Specialist by the association. He also helped found the Hawaii Chapter of the International Association of Assessors.
