A man was scammed out of 40,000 rupees by an unidentified person who contacted him via a WhatsApp video call pretending to be a former colleague using artificial intelligence-based tools.
The Kerala State Police Cyber Division said it received the information on Friday after which the funds were traced and contacted specific banks to block the amount.
Calicut-based Radhakrishnan received a WhatsApp video call from a former colleague he worked with in Andhra Pradesh.
Scammers use innovative methods to defraud people of their money. “Scammers used AI-based video interfaces to impersonate friends and demand money,” Cyberwing SP Hari Sankar told PTI.
Sankar said Radhakrishnan saw one of his former colleagues on a video call and responded accordingly.
“However, we received another call asking for more money, so we contacted the person directly and found out that we had been scammed. We were able to stop it,” Sankar said.
Cyberwing officials urged the public to contact the Kerala State Cyber Helpline number ‘1930’ if they suspect such calls.
He said the scammers used a basic AI-based video interface that could only be used with a blurred background and basic jaw, eye and lip movements.
