[KUALA LUMPUR] Malaysia's Ministry of Trade said on Monday (July 14) that export, transport and transport of high-performance artificial intelligence (AI) chips from US origin will be subject to trade permits.
Individuals or businesses must notify the authorities at least 30 days in advance when exporting, transshiping or transporting items not expressly listed on Malaysia's strategic item list, the ministry said in a statement.
The move will help close the regulatory gap, but Malaysia will review the inclusion of high-performance AI chips of US origin in its list of strategic items, the ministry added.
“Malaysia has endured attempts to engage in illegal trade activities by individuals or companies facing strict legal action if they circumvent export controls or violate the law.”
Southeast Asian countries have been working to tighten semiconductor regulations as they are under pressure from the US to stop the flow of chips, essential to the development of AI, into China. Financial Times It was reported in March.
Malaysia was also investigating whether local laws were violated by the shipment of servers linked to a Singapore fraud case. Reuters
