Hello AJ readers!

This week’s business news featured stories about the return of review teams, the opening of apprentice training centers and perhaps the use of AI leaflets. Let’s dive in.

On Friday, SMART Sheet Metal Workers Local Union 49 celebrated the grand opening of its Apprenticeship Training Center located at 11419 County Road 2220. The 9,000 square foot facility allows apprentices to receive sheet metal industry training close to home and to meet the needs of local contractors. Keep an eye out for an article about it in the next few days.

The next highlight is the review. This was something special. Because it was the last time my friend and colleague Mateo Rosiles was able to join before he moved to the Austin area as a reporter for USA TODAY’s Texas Connect. We’ve always had him on our review team since day one, and the next time he comes to Lubbock, we’ll definitely bug him to join us again.

Anyway, on to the review. Intern Sofia Bueno also participated. Together in one afternoon, we sampled 11 jerky and snack products from four local companies: Raider Red Meat, All Hale Meat, Buck’s Beef Jerky, and Jackson Brothers Meat Locker. Two of those four (Bucks Brothers and Jackson Brothers) swept the awards, giving Post the top spot for jerky.

Now, I’ll say something that will probably offend some people. If you’re one of the too many business owners using AI flyers, stop. All AI flyers look the same, with clashing colors, cartoonish figures that are clearly created by AI, and bits of information that aren’t properly placed. What pisses me off the most these days is that food companies are using AI flyer formats and not showing off their food. How can you trust the cooking of someone who can’t even show you his cooking? I don’t want to see AI versions of fried pies, cookies, nachos, etc. I would like to know what you sell and what I can expect on my plate.

Understood. Creating AI flyers becomes easy. That’s the trend. But it’s easy to judge by looking at the AI flyers at food stalls and photos of actual food at bakeries. I know what to expect from a bakery.

Rather than feed into AI trends, I’d like to highlight some better options.

  1. mobile phone camera. point. click. end. Let’s play around with the lighting a little. Take photos in front of stands/shops/signboards, etc. Show the world what you can do and post it on social media.
  2. camber. This app lets you design your own flyers (you can create one for free or upgrade for a few dollars a month). If you need some guidance, the formatting is already built in so you can also unleash your inner creative.
  3. Or, which is so important these days, you can support local artists. There are a lot of great people in Lubbock and they deserve our support.

Show the world who you are and what you love. Show that you care about your actions. Even if you’re not the best photographer in the world (and I know I’m never), have fun. We see as much failure as success. Creativity is human nature.

The monthly roundup is back next week, so that’s going to be a big part of my week. As always, stay tuned as we should have some cool items coming soon. As always, thanks for reading and supporting AJ.
