Lightning Labs Unveils Tool to Allow AI Apps to Seamlessly Interact with the Bitcoin Network
Crypto.news – On July 6th, Lightning Network developer Lightning Labs introduced a new toolkit that allows artificial intelligence (AI) applications to interact with the Bitcoin network through layer 2 solutions.
The latest move aims to make payments more efficient, affordable and convenient for AI developers. By leveraging the power of Lightning, developers can move away from traditional payment systems such as credit cards, which are often cumbersome and costly. Additionally, these tools enable the implementation of pay-as-you-go AI models on the Lightning Network.
The successful launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT has caused a surge in popularity in the AI industry. This advanced chatbot got him over 100 million users within two months of its November release.
ChatGPT is an example of a Large Language Model (LLM), which uses training on large datasets to generate human-like text in response to user prompts.
Leveraging the Power of Lightning for AI Payment Systems
Lightning Labs expressed enthusiasm for the innovation that the LLM model brings. The recently announced tool is built on the L402 protocol, the Lightning Network’s native authentication mechanism. It also makes use of Langchain, a library that simplifies working with AI applications.
Lightning Labs recognizes the challenge facing LLMs today in the absence of a native web-based payment mechanism. As a result, AI application developers often rely on outdated payment methods such as credit cards, resulting in additional user costs.
To address this problem, Lightning Labs proposed creating software that could charge for access to an application programming interface (API), facilitating communication between different software components.
The company gave examples of AI software or agents querying another agent on a paid basis. A querying agent pays for API access to the queried agent, and additional payments occur only after receiving a satisfactory response.
Lightning Labs highlighted the limitations facing growing intelligent LLMs or AI agents. Since these entities are not registered entities in any country, they struggle to access fiat payment systems.
Kody Low, developer of community payments platform Fedi, highlighted the interoperability of AI and Bitcoin in payments during an episode of the podcast “Stack Sats.” Lowe said Bitcoin offers a unique solution to AI companies’ monetization challenges.
Data from LN analytics platform 1ML shows that the current capacity of the Lightning Network is around 5,448 BTC ($144.9 million). However, according to Bitcoin Visuals, the number of Lightning Network channels has decreased from about 80,000 in July 2022 to about 70,000 today.
