Pentagon's embrace of the AI industry spent up to $800 million on the table as the Department of Defense issued a quartet of contracts that brought the biggest name to the officially folded.
The Pentagon's Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) today announced contracts with humanity, Google, Openai and Xai, helping to use artificial intelligence for numerous military purposes, each with a $200 million ceiling.
All four companies that have signed up for the work are behind the AI model. DOD believes there is a game-changing defense application. The Pentagon appears particularly keen on pursuing Agent AI, and mentions in its announcement that it hopes to use the skills of AI experts from four companies to “develop Agent AI workflows across various mission areas.”
DOD hopes that early experiments will help you understand how to apply AI for purposes, but four companies will be asked to “understand and address important national security needs.”
“Utilizing commercial solutions in an integrated functional approach will accelerate the use of advanced AI as part of the essential tasks of the joint mission,” said Doug Matty, Chief Digital and AI Officer at CDAO.
The advantages of the four contractors are pretty obvious, but I think DOD also has a fair deal.
For example, the US military has access to Google's latest AI models, and the Chocolate Factory also offers Pentagon access to Google infrastructure nationwide. Meanwhile, humanity said it would help the military identify the best AI use cases, help develop models tailored with DOD data, identify and mitigate hostile use of AI, and tackle “prototypes of frontier AI capabilities that advance US national security.”
Humanity pointed out that a multi-million dollar contract with DOD would be two years, and answered one of several questions the Pentagon asked him refused to answer.
Meanwhile, Xai has taken note of the agreement along with transactions that consider the US to be able to purchase products that can now be purchased through a general service agency. That is, they are generally available across the federal government.
While mentioning it in a CDAO press release, Openai has signed a $200 million DOD Frontier AI contract since last month when DOD announced a pilot program to watch ChatGPT makers develop unspecified frontier AI products for the Pentagon.
Openai has been confirmed Register The $200 million announcement shared in June was the same award as June 1st, which is an extension to the previous announcement rather than the company's new deal.
To sum it up, it appears that employees can protest defense contracts for everything they need, and businesses can argue that they don't want to be involved in defense activities, but at the end of the day it's pretty difficult to resist Uncle Sam's money and sweet, sweet data. Welcome to the Military Industrial Park, people. ®
