The Manchester Unit of the Center for AI Fundamentals and the European Institute for Learning Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) unit has been officially launched at the University.
The event, held in the Pankhurst Building, was attended by academics representing all faculties and the University's industry partners to learn about the establishment of these two leading artificial intelligence and machine learning research centres and hear more about their vision for their continued growth.
These centers aim to solve real-world challenges through AI-enabled collaboration with other disciplines, with a core focus on fundamental methods used to power AI solutions, and will benefit from cutting-edge research breakthroughs in new machine learning methodologies that could have profound benefits across disciplines.
The event was an opportunity for the Center to recognize its early success in successfully securing funding from three UKRI public calls.

- Center for Doctoral Training in Complex Systems Decision Making (CDT)
- AI Hub for Generative Models
This research income is driving much of the research at the center, with ongoing AI-focused research that bridges other fields such as robotics, healthcare, and sustainability.
More than 25 PhD students are currently enrolled across the AI Fundamentals and ELLIS units. Over the next few years he is expected to have over 30 PhD students joining him, and diverse and interesting opportunities will soon be advertised on his website at the Center and on the University's wider channels.
