Larian does not use generation AI for divinity concept art

Belgian game developer Larian Studios has confirmed that generative AI will not be used in concept art during the creation of its new RPG Divinity.

CEO and co-founder Swen Vinke said in an ask me anything (AMA) on Reddit that the company does not use generative AI as part of the concept art process. The studio leader added that no concept art was created using generative AI, but said he could see how people were confused by his earlier statements.

Vincke previously told Bloomberg that attempts to incorporate AI into Divinity's creation drew backlash, particularly because the developer appeared to be using artificial intelligence to create concept art. The studio's CEO later clarified that he had no intention of replacing concept artists with AI, adding that the company used the technology “to explore things.”

In a Reddit AMA, Vincke said that generation AI will be removed from the entire concept art process to ensure players know that all art is original.

“There will be no generative AI art in Divinity,” he wrote.

“We know there's a lot of discussion about using AI tools as part of concept art exploration. We've already said that this doesn't mean the actual concept art is generated by AI, but we understand that it's caused some confusion.

“So, for the avoidance of doubt, we decided to refrain from using generative AI tools during concept art development.

“Then you can't argue about the origins of art.”

Vincke went on to say that Larian still plans to use generative AI internally in hopes that the technology will speed up development.

“That being said, we're continually working to improve the speed at which we try things out. The more iterations we have, the better the gameplay generally is,” he said.

“We think generative AI can help with this, and we're experimenting with different things across departments. Our hope is that generative AI will help us refine ideas faster, leading to more focused development cycles, less waste, and ultimately higher quality games.”

The studio's CEO concluded his response by saying that when Larian uses generative AI to create Divinity's “creative assets,” it will use models trained on its own internal data.

“The important thing to note is that unless we are 100% sure of the origin of the training data and the consent of the data creator, we will not generate any ‘creative assets’ that will eventually be incorporated into the game,” he said.

“When we use a generative AI model to create an in-game asset, it is trained on data that we own.”

Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3 has sold over 20 million copies to date. The developer recently announced a new entry in the Divinity franchise at The Game Awards 2025.
