The cyber wing of the Kerala Police registered a case on Thursday after an AI-generated video depicting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar was posted on social media platform X under the handle Lakshmi N. Raju.
Polls will be held in Kerala on April 9, and police said the post was misleading and could “adversely impact the conduct of free and fair elections.”
The video pertains to the controversy surrounding the now-withdrawn ECI letter, which bore the seal of the Central Bank of Kerala and was forwarded to all political parties in the state earlier this month. The ECI clarified that this was a clerical error. official was suspended from school in this regard.
The retracted letter was widely circulated on social media platforms, forcing the ECI to approach the Cyber Police, which issued notices to social media platforms Facebook, Instagram and X asking them to remove the letter from their platforms.
A video posted by Lakshmi N. Raju shows AI-generated images of PM Modi and the Election Commissioner interacting with each other and claims that the BJP and ECI were working together.
Referring to the case registered under the IT Act, Cyber Police said, “The content may mislead the public and damage their social standing.” Credibility of constitutional institutionsnegatively impacting the conduct of free and fair elections. In accordance with the Model Code of Conduct and applicable legal provisions, the Cyber Wing of the Kerala Police has immediately initiated measures to prevent further circulation of the content. “Required legal notices have been issued to the intermediary platforms for prompt removal of illegal content in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act and Rules,” it said.
