Police said the victim, Radhakrishnan, received a WhatsApp video call from a former colleague he worked with in Andhra Pradesh. However, the man pretending to be his former colleague was actually an AI-generated image.
An official with the Kerala State Police Cyber Division said they received the information on Friday, followed by tracing of the funds and contacting certain banks to block the amount.
Calicut-based scammers are using innovative methods to trick people out of their money. “Scammers used AI-based video interfaces to impersonate friends and demand money,” Cyberwing SP Hari Sankar told news agency PTI.
The officer said Radhakrishnan saw one of his former colleagues on a video call and responded accordingly. “However, when he received another call demanding more money, he contacted the person directly and found out that he had been scammed. We were able to stop it,” Sankar said.
Cyberwing officials urged the public to contact the Kerala State Cyber Helpline number ‘1930’ if they suspect such calls.
He said the scammers used a basic AI-based video interface that could only be used with a blurred background and basic jaw, eye and lip movements.
