K-Pop groups Aespa and SEVENTEEN use AI to track trends

AI Video & Visuals

Last month, SEVENTEEN revealed that they used AI-generated scenes in the music video and teasers for their new song “MAESTRO,” a concept that matches the video's theme, which questions the identity of a true maestro in an era when technological advancements are blurring the boundaries of creativity.

Woozi, a member of SEVENTEEN who has produced the group's albums since their debut, shared his thoughts on the matter. At the press conference for their greatest hits album “17 IS RIGHT HERE” held on April 29, Woozi said the following: “Of course, I tried using AI to compose music and write lyrics. I practiced a lot. I thought that instead of complaining about the advancement of technology, we should adapt to it.”

He also added: “We are constantly thinking about the pros and cons of how to maintain our unique identity in the face of rapidly changing technology. This understanding was often shared with our music video directors.”

Similarly, aespa used AI in the music video for “Supernova,” one of the main tracks from their first full-length album, released on the 27th. In the video, the members' faces are stationary, and their mouths move unnaturally as they sing.

Group member Ningning commented: “It was an unexpected sight. It made me think deeply. Takeovers using AI and related technologies are becoming more and more popular. Seeing this made me realize that no matter how much AI evolves, it will never be able to reproduce human warmth or facial expressions.” In the case of aespa, this eerie effect was intentional, fitting the concept and highlighting their unique metallic aesthetic.

Virtual idols such as MAVE, which utilize AI technology, are also becoming more capable of more subtle expressions. An AI-generated virtual human called Louis has also been introduced, demonstrating how advanced technology can greatly improve the final product. Contrary to concerns that AI will replace human creativity, AI appears to be enhancing it.

It is hoped that through these pioneering efforts, the entertainment industry will come to see AI not as a threat, but as a valuable tool that should be actively utilized.
