JLT Mobile Computers and Linnaeus University join forces to improve the safety of AI in vehicle-mounted computing

JLT Mobile Computers have worked closely with Linnaeus University to develop innovative AI-powered solutions to improve safety in industrial environments.

JLT Mobile Computer, a leading developer of rugged computing solutions for demanding environments, is partnering with Sweden's Linnaeus University to develop innovative, AI-driven safety applications that help businesses to reduce driver distractions and help companies comply with evolving global regulations.

Screen blanking solutions use artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to automatically blank out the display of computers installed on the vehicle when the vehicle is moving, and restore it as soon as the vehicle stops. This addresses legal requirements in some areas where such measures are required, increasing the operational safety of warehouses, logistics hubs and industrial facilities.

While computers mounted on vehicles are essential tools for industrial operations, active screens can distract you from driving tasks. JLT and Linnaeus University have combined practical industry expertise with advanced AI research to create efficient and reliable solutions, except for the need for additional, expensive hardware.

Using built-in motion sensors on JLT6012 computers, the team collected partially simulated real-world motion data using a modified shopping cart. Researchers at Linnaeus University have developed a highly optimized AI model that can detect vehicle movement with minimal CPU usage while maintaining high accuracy.

“For us as a leading academic institution with deep theoretical knowledge of computer science and mathematics, it is extremely valuable to see our research apply to real-world problems,” says Björn Lindenberg, a senior lecturer in mathematics at Rinnaise University. “This collaboration with JLT demonstrates how AI and high-performance computing can change industry safety.”

The Screen Blanking Application has passed rigorous internal testing and is currently taking part in pilot trials with live forklift operations customers. This next step will verify performance in a real-world industrial environment and ensure that it meets both compliance and safety objectives.
