Generative artificial intelligence is rapidly gaining traction around the world, with Japanese companies from Softbank to Hitachi developing the technology or incorporating it into their businesses. At the same time, the government is working to develop a national AI strategy.
Following the public release of Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s ChatGPT last November, global tech giants such as California-based Google and China’s Baidu have rolled out their own AI-powered chatbots. However, the absence of Japanese companies is conspicuous.
Even so, domestic companies are beginning to show their presence, with SoftBank’s mobile division announcing earlier this month that it will develop a Japanese version of ChatGPT.
