The University of Birmingham has welcomed over 1,500 Indian students to its campus over the past five years, and data shows that the university’s graduate programs are among the most popular among Indian students on campus. “Programs in business, computer science, engineering, law and biological sciences are very popular among Indian students,” the delegation revealed.
Sir Curran Billimoria is the Chancellor of the University of Birmingham. As a former international student, he has fought for their rights.
The rector will talk about work visas after school, Indian students in the UK and the University of Birmingham, new scholarships and more.
There are some rumors about the reduction of work visas for international students after they start school. TRUE?
These are all rumors you hear. It is clear that the University of Birmingham should do nothing to reduce visas after two years of graduation. Because it has a very detrimental effect on (UK) international students. Then it goes to competing countries such as Australia, Canada and the USA. Because all of these countries offer post-study work opportunities.
A two-year post-study work visa was enacted in 2007-2008 and abolished in 2011-2012. Then it was brought back as we fought for it. All surveys showed that the lack of post-study job opportunities was the number one reason why students around the world, including those from India, did not choose the UK as their first choice. Two years have passed and the number of international students, including Indians, has increased.
Indian students have overtaken Chinese to become the number one international student in the UK. Today’s figure is about Rs 6.90 lakh so we have achieved our target of Rs 6 lakhs for international students. International students are a great asset to our university and our country. More importantly, it enriches the experience of domestic students and universities. They will also become lifelong ambassadors for Great Britain and the national team, building bridges with their home countries.
There are more world leaders educated at British universities than in any other country in the world. In India alone, he has four British-educated prime ministers. It is therefore important that we do all we can to attract Indian students to come and study at our university.Birmingham has had Indian students for over a century.
There is also a labor shortage in the UK. To fill that gap, we seek excellent international students, including those from India, who can stay and work for two years, as it gives them the ability to earn money to pay for their education, in addition to gaining work experience. We are getting graduates.
Why was the reduction of work visas after school proposed?
When submitting immigration figures, the United Nations asks countries to include international students as immigrants. They are not immigrants because they return to their home countries, but they must be included as immigrants.
As the number of international students increases, the number of net migrations in immigration data increases. It raises the question of reducing the numbers, and one way is to reduce the number of international students. Other countries submit aggregated figures to the UN, but separate them for domestic purposes. That’s what Britain should do.
The number of international students heading to the UK has increased, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. Do you think it’s because of your post-school work visa?
very. That’s one of the main reasons, and really the only reason. Covid has affected the whole world and even the war between Ukraine and Russia. For three years he went through a global crisis that we have not seen since World War II. It affects every country and economy in the world. It affected every sector of the economy. Of course, studying abroad was also affected, but even so, he achieved his goal of 600,000 students amid the pandemic, and now he has over 690,000, with Indians continuing to be the UK’s largest number of international students. .
Recent figures show that Indian students outnumber Chinese in the UK.
There are several reasons why Indians employ Chinese. The first main reason is a work visa for two years after graduation. Second, China has its own set of issues with its Covid-zero policy and travel restrictions overall, which has been a big problem for them.
As the number of international students in the UK increases, so does the student housing crisis. How is the University of Birmingham coping?
We were able to curb this problem by providing on-campus accommodation for all first-year students. So we have never let our students down. As far as I know, everyone is fully contained.
Accommodation at the University of Birmingham is also state-of-the-art to an amazing standard. Housed players for the duration of the Commonwealth Games. We understand that not all UK universities are in a position to do what we do. we are very lucky We are he one of the largest universities in the country.
But there is a housing shortage in the UK, with the authorities supposedly building 3 million homes a year, but not even 10 million. So there is no doubt that this will be a challenge for governments for years to come. I need to build a house. There is a general shortage, and students are also affected. But as far as I know, the university was able to help and find a way out. However, the majority of colleges cannot provide accommodation for his sophomore and her junior years, so local housing must be sought. The University of Birmingham guarantees housing to all her freshmen.
This is the age of artificial intelligence (AI) such as ChatGPT taking over, and there is a great deal of debate about whether this technology should be used in the education sector. what do you think about this?
Technological progress cannot be stopped, it must be tackled, but the fundamentals of the field of education remain the same.
Going back 900,000 years ago, the whole idea of the university was to allow people to come together, exchange ideas, collaborate with each other, and meet for research. I don’t think AI can take away its power to connect people.
That said, we remain focused on ensuring that we continue to encourage and teach the Socratic method of learning (theory) that challenges, challenges, learns, understands, and applies our reason. And of course, in the future we will be using all kinds of technology, but we have to remember the basics.
You have launched a Dean Scholarship for Indian Students…
As an international student myself who had to get multiple scholarships to study abroad, I know how difficult it is to get through this. That’s why I introduced the President’s Scholarship for Indian students.
My main motivation is to demonstrate that the selected students have excellent academic performance and have overcome difficult situations. You must have innovative ideas that can solve some things. We are looking for students who are ready to fight the odds and have an innovative approach.

Is the University of Birmingham interested in setting up a campus in India now that UGC is inviting foreign universities to India?
This is a great initiative and opportunity and if we do it it will allow Indian students to get the same quality education they get on our campuses in the UK or Dubai at a more affordable price. It’s amazing.
We are definitely dribbling with the idea and the question is when will we set up a campus here. Having said that, we have just launched our campus in Dubai and our main focus now is to help the campus reach its full potential. , which we will definitely consider.
In the meantime, we partnered with IIT Madras for a joint master’s degree. This gives students the opportunity to study at both campuses and earn degrees from both institutions. It starts with AI and data science.
