Social media influencers are well known for working hard, securing brand deals and promoting content on their platforms.

However, AI influencers are now beginning to hijack social media platforms. He does the same job, claiming many followers and setting unrealistic aesthetic expectations for his followers.

Barry O'Sullivan, a member of the University College Cork's Department of Computer Science and IT Department and the government's AI Advisory Committee, said the people behind these accounts view them as assets that should be sold.

“The goal here is to create a social media asset that you can make purely money and sell,” he said. Lunchtime live.


“So there are big advocates, and it's appealing to those who want to place their products or place brands because these accounts have a large number of people. It's really business.

“People can create these things with the intention of bringing as many followers as possible over a short period of time, which are very appealing to businesses that want to sell their products.

“But it can continue to do that for other social media influencers who want to buy the following for that account.”

O'Sullivan said the people behind these profiles could create a network of fake accounts to help:

Mandy Maher, the platform's owner and content creator, said the technology would “be harmful to anyone in the industry.”

“I know that's coming to our future generations, but it's actually scary to know what will actually be and what won't,” she says.

“When you follow someone, you follow them for their authenticity, they are real and they are attractive, but when you see something like this where you are actually a robot, I just think everything is absolutely odd.”
