Universities around the world are under siege. The rise in tuition fees, lower employment opportunities for graduates, and the rapid spread of micro-learning and AI-powered learning platforms have led many to ask. Is a university degree still worth it? For the generations raised in YouTube tutorials, Coursera courses and ChatGpt, traditional four-year degrees look like an expensive relic.
This skepticism is not without reason. Micro-Credentials promises focused, affordable job-ready skills. Employers are increasingly accepting alternative accreditations. AI has democratized access to knowledge. Distant village students now have access to explanations, simulations, and even personalized coaching.
But in the noise there is a risk that one important truth is forgotten. The university wasn't just about content delivery and practical skills development. They were and still are about human connection, socialization, and civic formation.
Think about what will happen on university campuses beyond classrooms. Lifelong friendships are built, identity is tested and reshaped, and young people learn to live independently. Cafeteria, late-night research groups, discussions in sports, theater, and activism – all of these seemingly peripheral activities shape individuals so that Zoom lectures and skill badges never do. University is a melting pot of crossing intelligence, personality and social responsibility.
The university teaches more than narrow technical skills. Micro-Credentials can authenticate you with data analysis or project management, but it cannot teach you how to integrate knowledge across disciplines. A way of thinking critically about ethics, history, or society. Or how to go beyond differences and engage in difficult conversations.
The problem is not that universities are outdated. That means they allowed themselves to be perceived as a high-value training factory. Their survival depends on regaining their deeper purpose. How can universities deal with this crisis of trust?
First, they have to reconstruct their value proposition. University education should be presented not as a mere ticket to employment, but as a meaningful foundation for life. Employers change and industry collapse, but the ability to think positively, adapt and engage with society can endure.
Second, universities need to adopt a hybrid model. Degrees can incorporate microcresincials. Stackable modular pathways allow learners to pause, work, and come back, making higher education a lifelong companion, rather than a one-off purchase.
Third, they must lean towards what AI can't do: mentorship, argumentation, intellectual relationships. AI can deliver information. We cannot provide wisdom. Faculty members should not see themselves very often as content providers and as mentors who guide, challenge and inspire. This human role is irreplaceable.
Finally, they must be transparent about the outcome. In Pakistan, where higher education is already under pressure due to lack of funding and quality concerns, the trust deficit is severe. Alumni often have a hard time finding jobs, but campuses are perceived as being politically billed or cut off by market reality. Universities need to demonstrate both the outcome of employment potential and broader contributions to social development.
Pakistan faces certain challenges. With one of the world's youngest populations, the country cannot afford to throw away universities to become obsolete. Online courses may fill short-term skills gaps, but they cannot replace the civic, intellectual and social functions offered by universities. When polarization, disinformation and intolerance threaten the structure of society, the need for institutions to cultivate critical thinking, dialogue and shared identities is greater than ever.
The future of higher education is not about simple choices between traditional universities and microcresincials, but about integration, adaptation, and clarity of purpose. Colleges clinging to the old model of expensive degrees that promises automatic employment will be a struggle. But those who embrace flexibility while defending their unique human role can thrive.
