iOS 18 might bring a bit more enjoyment to your iPhone experience. Power On This week's newsletter, BloombergMark Gurman of Apple.com reports that AI-generated emojis will be one of the new features Apple will show off at WWDC next month. As if the current emoji library is too overwhelming, Gurman writes that the company is “developing software that will allow users to instantly create custom emojis based on what they send in a text.” Personally, I can't wait to see what cursed creations emerge from that software.
Apple is also reportedly planning to give iPhone users more options to customize their apps and home screens, including the ability to change the color of app icons and arrange them more freely without being tied to a grid layout. The latter in particular is a pretty big change for Apple, but it's sure to be welcomed by users who have been wanting to get more creative with their home screen designs. Of course, these are still rumors, so don't take them as confirmation.
There's been a lot of talk about Apple's AI plans ahead of its annual developer conference, which kicks off on June 10, but rather than announcing anything flashy at this stage, Gurman suggested Apple will stick to putting the technology to practical use. Apple is expected to announce a partnership with OpenAI, which Gurman said could bring AI to Safari search, Siri, photo retouching, voice memo transcription and more. The company may also introduce smart summaries for notifications, web pages and more.
