Apple is set to announce iOS 27 at WWDC on June 8th, and we’re learning new details about what to expect from the next big iPhone software release. In a new report, Bloomberg’s Mark Garman provides more information about the changes coming to Siri, among other things.
Siri works with more AI chatbot apps through extensions
Starting with iOS 18 in 2024, Siri has ChatGPT integration. Apple initially said it wanted to add more providers like Google Gemini, but that never happened. Instead, Apple has signed an agreement with Google to use Gemini AI models to power unreleased Siri and Apple Intelligence features for personal intelligence and in-app controls. These features are not yet available, but will be available in the future.
Rather than entering into different agreements with AI providers, Apple is instead adding an extension system to Siri that would allow AI chatbots to integrate with Siri, Garman reports.
For example, Anthropic’s Claude app works with Siri. This does not change Apple’s agreement with Google to use Gemini AI models to power Apple Intelligence and certain Siri features.
iPhone, iPad, and Mac support new features
The new system comes with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. Gurman includes some text from a test version of one of the operating systems in his report.
“Extensions enable installed app agents to interact with Siri, the Siri app, and other features on your device,” according to a message in a test version of the upcoming operating system. From this menu, users can navigate to the new App Store section to add additional AI services.
After the new system is announced, you will need to update your AI chatbot app to take advantage of iOS 27’s new Siri integration.
Meanwhile, starting with this week’s iOS 26.4 release, AI chatbots can now integrate with CarPlay for the first time. Similarly, new features require developers to update their apps.
Separately, Gurman reported that Apple plans to make Siri act more like an AI chatbot in iOS 27, and the company is also testing a standalone Siri app. Garman said the new app will also support an extension system.
