IBM has set a goal of net-zero operational GHG emissions by 2030, with residual CO2 emissions below 350,000 tons. This requires reducing current operational emissions as much as possible through energy savings. This means increasing operational efficiency and energy savings, and reducing energy consumption.

One of the key challenges is data. When it comes to sustainability, it's often said that “you can't manage what you don't measure.” Jimmy McDonough, global energy manager at IBM Global Real Estate, knows tools powered by artificial intelligence (AI) are the key to addressing this.

In 2023, AI will enable Jimmy and the rest of IBM's team to capture and analyze IBM's energy data within a single auditable tool across a portfolio of more than 600 locations. This allows businesses to retrieve reports and filter by location, geography, utilities, etc. to see where energy consumption is highest, where there have been unexpected changes in energy, and opportunities for businesses to drive energy savings. You can see where it is most common. Contribute to achieving the 2030 net zero goal.

For Jimmy and other IBMers, incorporating this philosophy and strategy throughout the company's operations yields new insights that create new energy-saving opportunities.
