Currently, AI has 39 international standards. The debate over other uses of AI is ongoing and India will ultimately adopt these standards.
According to Nidhi Kare, Secretary of Consumer Affairs, artificial intelligence has become a part of our daily lives, and global organizations are working to create an ethical framework for its use.
“Indian experts are on the International Standards Setting Committee,” Khare told PTI at the PTI meeting about using AI to combat fraud and forgery in retail and e-commerce. “When global standards are set, countries including India will adopt them.”
Khare noted that 39 global AI standards already exist, and 45 are being developed. A discussion at the recent International Committee on Electrical Engineering (IEC) conference focused on developing standards for responsible, comprehensive, ethical use of AI.
Discussions about AI use
She already has 39 international standards, but “What is ethical use? This has been discussed internationally… Who do we call safe and fair? Who do we call dangerous and unethical use?” She also emphasized that many Indian experts are leading these international organizations and helping to form global AI standards.
Government creating legal frameworks
Khare stressed that these new standards will encourage the government to create legal frameworks to prevent consumers from manipulating or misconduct. She expressed concern about the possibility of AI misuse, saying, “Have you seen how AI has spread propaganda? That's absolutely unacceptable.” She describes AI as “a huge challenge in today's world,” pointing out that this technology can outperform human intuition.
“You might think AI is unrealistic,” she said.
Despite these challenges, Kare recognized the positive contributions of AI, particularly in social media and innovation. “Social media and platforms are all based on AI,” she said. “It's a great creative innovation.”
The meeting highlighted the dual nature of AI. The possibility of fighting fraud in retail and e-commerce poses risks when used unethically. India's active role in these international committees allows the country to shape the way AI governance evolves globally.
