IMF First Deputy Managing Director Gita Gopinath warns of “major labor market disruption” from generative artificial intelligence, urges policy makers to quickly formulate rules to govern the technology solicited, the Financial Times reported Monday.
In an interview with the FT, Gopinath said, “We need governments, institutions and policy makers to act swiftly on all fronts, not only in terms of regulation, but perhaps also in preparing for significant labor market disruptions. There is,” he said.
She also advocated for the government to strengthen the “social safety net” for workers affected by AI adoption, while tackling tax policies that would not reward companies that replace their workers with machines.
Mr. Gopinath cautioned policymakers to beware that some firms could take a strong position in new technology.
“We don’t want mega-corporations with huge amounts of data and computing power to have an unfair advantage,” Gopinath told the newspaper.
