Groundbreaking research conducted by Prof. Rahul, Assistant Professor of Fuels, Mineral and Metallurgical Engineering at IIT (ISM) ranked 7th in the world for the use of machine learning in the design of high-entropy alloys.

Prof. Rahul said that this ranks first in the country and most notably that B. Tech students have supported the research.

Professor Rahul is an Indian pioneer in the use of machine learning in alloy design, with a focus on high entropy alloys (HEA), a relatively new concept beyond traditional alloys, especially in high temperature and biomedical applications. .

It is worth mentioning here that high entropy alloys are formed by mixing equal or relatively large proportions of five or more elements. Professor Rajiv Shekhar, Director of IIT (ISM) said: It was carried out with the support of B Tech, not PhD students,” added Professor Shekhar.

Alloys play an important role in industries ranging from transportation to manufacturing to medical devices. The use of machine learning is expected to revolutionize the process of alloy design and reduce lead times to commercialization from his previous 10-12 years to several years.

“Advanced applications require the design and development of new materials,” said Prof. Rahul.

He added that traditional materials development approaches require many experimental runs, resources and time. “Recently, the application of artificial intelligence is attracting attention in various fields,” the professor explains in detail.

“We use machine learning approaches to predict the phase formation of new alloys, predict their mechanical properties, classify and enhance alloy microstructures, identify defects in additive manufacturing conditions, and develop ML-enabled processing maps. We have solved the problem of development.

“The application of ML minimizes the resources and time required to develop new alloys,” added Professor Rahul.

He added that excerpts from his latest research, which he began in 2020 with the department’s B Tech students, have been published in journals such as Scripta Materialsia, Computational Materials Science, and the Journal of Alloys and Compounds.

Professor Rahul, who joined IIT (ISM) as an Assistant Professor in July 2000, has several ongoing projects, including two externally funded projects. One of which he is Rs 30.91 lakh and is titled ‘Machine Learning Enablement Framework for the Design of Novel Multi-Component Alloys’ and other projects. 28.36 million rupees. Title: Development of Microstructures, Properties, Processing, and Correlation of Nickel-Based Superalloys.

Apart from this, he is also working on a project titled Rapid Solidification Research for the Design of Alloys for Additive Manufacturing.
