Tom’s Guide Verdict: ‘Invincible’ Season 4 Premiere

- verdict: Invincible may have been really hurt by the long hiatus between seasons 1 and 2. Now that we’re in season 4, it feels like it’s lost momentum. There are still some emotionally devastating moments, but sometimes getting through this three-episode premiere can feel like a chore.

“Invincible” Season 4 has officially arrived with the premiere of the third episode on Prime Video. I’ll admit, I love this show, but by the end of season 3 I was wondering if this show had missed its moment. Season 1 was great, but it took a while for season 2 to be split into two four-part episodes.
Now, after watching the first three episodes of season 4, I’m worried that this show is losing its luster, too. “Invincible” was magical in its use of traditional superhero animated series to deliver emotionally powerful moments that would leave your jaw on the floor. Sure, there was some blood and gore along the way, but between Mark’s (Steven Yeun) disastrous origins, soul-crushing fate, and complex relationships, the show’s success came from creating emotional stakes and then smashing them with hammer blows of violence and dialogue.

We still see some of that in Season 4. There’s an ending to episode 3, which I won’t spoil, but it does bring some emotional complexity, and it was very clear to me. why This premiere ended with episode 3.
And episode 2 was the one time this show immediately reminded me of what “Invincible” was like at its peak, after which I was hooked and held attention to every frame. In this episode, the backstory of Nolan (JK Simmons) and Viltrumite is fully revealed. devastating.
The only problem is that as the episode progresses a bit, this profound revelation fades as Nolan ends up overhearing the alien Allen (Seth Rogen) and Allen’s girlfriend Terrier (Tatiana Maslany) having sex in the room next to the one Nolan is trying to sleep in. It’s funny the first or second time, but it gets repetitive for the rest of the episode.

I’m still holding out hope that this was just a slow start to season 4
Complaints about the comedy parts being poorly executed aside, at times it almost felt like an arduous task to get through the first three episodes. Sometimes the pace is slow, and other times it veers off into one of the show’s many storylines. This is a problem with comic book adaptations, and it’s not uncommon to spend an issue on a B or C story.
But real estate on television is more finite, and this show has already spent much of its season 4 airtime. There are only five episodes left, but it doesn’t feel like we’re getting much closer to what should be the core conflict between Mark/Invincible and Viltrumite leader Thrag (Lee Pace).
Still, I’m hopeful that the ball is finally starting to move. There are some stories that slowly move toward a conclusion that could have a shocking climax. If at least some of these stories can cross the finish line in the final five episodes of season 4, we might be able to talk about more shocking moments for “Invincible.”
