The center focuses on ethical and humanities-based research in AI rather than technology itself, Assistant Professor Andre Curtis Trudel, who directs the center, explained to listeners.
“Modern AI systems can be used to generate misinformation. In some cases, they can make certain types of cybercrime easier. In some cases, they can exacerbate mental health crisis, and of course there are some questions about the environmental impact of AI.”
He said faculty will lead research and workshops addressing issues such as misinformation, cybercrime, mental health impacts and environmental concerns related to AI use.
The Center will partner with community organizations to host an event in 2026, develop a K-12 lesson plan, and launch an AI Ethics summer camp for high school students. Public engagement is also an important goal. The forum plans to gather opinions on how to use AI responsibly in your daily life.
The initiative, led by Dean James Mack of College of Arts and Science, is supported by nearly $500,000 from the National Humanities and $165,000 from UC College of Arts and Science.
