June 12, 2025 (MLN): If the US continues to impose AI semiconductor restrictions on China, chipmaker Huawei will take advantage of its position in the world's second-largest economy, said Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.
“Our technology is a generation ahead of theirs,” Huang told CNBC on the sidelines at the Viva Technology Conference in Paris.
However, he warned that “If the US doesn't want to participate, if they don't want to participate, if they don't want to participate, Huawei will cover China and Huawei will cover everyone else.”
Faced with US export curbs that limit the purchase of advanced semiconductors used in AI development, Beijing is focusing on cultivating domestic companies such as Huawei to build their own AI chip ecosystem, following CNBC.
Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei told the Communist Party's Daily Newspaper this week that Huawei's single chips are still behind the US by generation.
“The US exaggerates Huawei's performance. Huawei isn't that big. We have to work hard to reach their reputation,” Ren said.
Huang said it is important for AI developers around the world to build on China's technology stack and layers of technology.
“If the US technology stack wants to win all over the world, it's not wise to abandon 50% of the world's AI researchers. As long as all AI developers are in China, I think the Chinese stack will win.
And we need to be aware of short-term actions regarding long-term and unintended consequences,” he said.
The export curb proved like a painful place as trade tensions grew between the US and China.
Last month, the White House said it would “actively cancel visas for Chinese students,” including those studying in key fields.
China also accused the US of undermining trade negotiations after issuing industry warnings about the US using Chinese chips that have picked up Huawei.
Huang said it was his job to inform President Donald Trump's administration of the nature of Nvidia's technology and industry dynamics. “I know what he's doing,” Trump said.
He has a game plan. I trust him and we will do our best to make him,” he said.
Nvidia's CEO is making waves in Europe this week.
He told the audience that the country has “one of the richest AI communities on the planet” as it pledged its investment commitment from his company.
