Landing an internship abroad is an ambitious goal for many university students aspiring to become great data scientists.
Not only can you travel and discover new cultures, but you can also work as a data science intern. This experience is enriching both on a personal and technical level.
Getting an internship in the field of data science is becoming more and more difficult, especially with ChatGPT. Many companies are shifting towards artificial intelligence and data science.
This has resulted in many people trying to enter this field and secure an internship opportunity. Due to the high level of competition, you need to distinguish yourself from others.
Ask yourself, what makes me more eligible for this position? Why should I get this position and not someone else?
The way to distinguish yourself is by not simply following what others are doing, but by building your own projects and cultivating a strong passion for them. Reflect on what truly excites you in the field of data science.
For inspiration, I’ll share a few ideas with you that could help you become a stronger candidate:
- Previous Internships, work/research experience.
- End to End project with an open source dataset (Go through all the steps needed from data understanding, cleaning, analysis, pipelines and deployment)
- Open source contributions (e.g. Major League Hacking)
- Join communities like Omdena
- Participate In Data Science competitions like Kaggle and Zindi
- Participate in Hackathons and Competitions like Microsoft’s Imagine Cup
- Get certifications and do training programs (e.g. TensorFlow certification, courses on Coursera)
I hope these ideas help you learn significantly and enable you to create substantial content that you can include on your resume.
