The trust and productivity paradox
Despite widespread adoption and perceived benefits, some software development experts remain cautious about using AI in their own work. Our report reveals an astounding “confidence paradox.” 24% of respondents reported “very” (4%) or “many” trust in AI (20%), with 30% trusting “little” (23%) or “no at all” (7%). This shows that the AI output is perceived as useful and valuable by many of the survey respondents this year, despite lack of complete confidence in them. This could also mean that AI is built into workflows as a tool to help increase productivity and efficiency, rather than as a perfect alternative to human judgment.
AI improves individual performance, but its impact on organizations is more complicated. This year's survey shows that AI adoption is currently linked to high throughput in software delivery. This means that the team is releasing more software and applications. This is a positive reversal of last year's survey results. However, there remains a continuing challenge to ensure that the software works as intended before it is delivered to users.
Reflection on how the team works
Our research this year also found that AI can function as “mirrors and multipliers.” In a cohesive organization, AI increases efficiency. The fragmented ones emphasize weaknesses.
To better understand these underlying conditions, this year's report will go beyond simple performance metrics to uncover seven different team archetypes and provide a deeper, more human-centered view of what drives the success of AI adoption. These profiles provide richer narratives that help organizations understand the unique interactions of performance, happiness and work environments, from “harmonious high-chievers” to teams caught up in “legacy bottlenecks.”
For organizations ready to adopt AI, new tools can help evolve their work processes. This means you can benefit from both increased productivity and the resulting transformations.
A blueprint to guide organizational AI
However, adopting AI alone is not sufficient to guarantee success. So this year we're also introducing a new blueprint for seven key features to amplify the impact of AI. The DORA AI functional model is based on extensive research and identifies the convergence of technical and cultural factors essential to success.
