To better prepare students for their post-college careers, faculty and campus leaders are prioritizing education on the tools and capabilities of generative artificial intelligence.

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most disruptive technologies in recent years. To fulfill higher education's mission of equipping students with lifelong skills and learning, faculty across disciplines are bringing AI tools into the classroom.
Inside higher educationA new survey of chief academic officers and presidents found that 14 percent are rethinking their curriculum to prepare students for AI in the workforce, and a further 73 percent plan to do so. Among students, 72% responded to the Winter 2023 Student Voice survey. Inside higher education College Pulse and College Pulse believe that educational institutions need to be “substantial” or “somewhat” prepared to use AI in the workplace.
Amid the possibilities of how generative AI can improve student learning, faculty are incorporating AI in student support, as course topics and as research tools.
Look at the numbers
According to Lightcast's 2023 analysis, 2% of U.S. job postings in 2023 required AI skills. Although generative AI is the least in-demand skill next to machine learning and robotic systems skills, many higher education leaders believe it is the skill that will future-proof students' degrees.
The majority of students have never leveraged generative AI for personal or academic use. As of November 2023, one survey found that more than a third of U.S. students say they use these tools monthly, and another survey found that 20 percent use AI in their classes. I found out that there is.

Chatbots are not a new AI tool, but generative AI opens up more opportunities for instructors to automate messaging with learners.

Similarly, the University of Georgia, Morgan State University, and the University of Central Florida will introduce chatbot technology to first-year math and English classes starting in fall 2024 as part of a Department of Education grant program to study the role of chatbots on student outcomes. We plan to introduce . Chatbots answer questions about course materials, remind students of upcoming assignments, and provide motivational support.
Hult International Business School and Columbia University students will experience generative AI through an online digital marketing simulation. The game allows students to interact with her AI-powered customer personas to make smarter decisions in their campaigns.
AI as a course topic: Other faculty work directly with technology in the classroom, teaching students how to hone and develop their own AI tools and projects.
The University of Mary Washington's Fall 2023 course taught students how to leverage ChatGPT and generative AI, and the challenges and opportunities they bring. The Special Topics in Digital Studies course was taught by Anand Rao, Professor of Communication and Chair of the Department of Communication and Digital Studies.
Students built their own generative AI tools using low-code and no-code options, including PlayLab, an edtech platform that helps users create AI chatbots.
American University's Kogod School of Business announced in March that it would update all of its curriculum starting in fall 2024, teaching students rapid engineering and programming, as well as coding in R, Python, and AI/ML models. Course content ranges from using AI in real-world situations to applying it in abstract and theoretical ways.
New students are also required to complete AI courses and workshops as part of their undergraduate core curriculum.
Georgia Tech's College of Engineering is overhauling its course offerings to enhance artificial intelligence and machine learning education at the university, with six new courses launching in spring 2024. Most of the courses are major-specific, such as How to Use AI in Civil and Environmental Engineering and How to Use AI in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Some include bioinformatics, but others are more general, such as decision making and data analysis.
AI in research: As artificial intelligence tools develop, Cornell researchers expect AI to become part of the next generation of researchers' toolboxes, so professors will participate in and lead thoughtful discussions about AI. you need to be prepared to do so.
University officials also believe it is important to establish clear policies regarding the use of tools in research to protect researcher privacy and adhere to ethical practices.
Boston University is piloting an effort to help first-year writing students understand how they work with AI in their writing and research to inform future program guidelines. The goal is to provide teachers with best practices for teaching the ethical and responsible use of AI and to develop assignments and activities to better teach these concepts.
