How are professors using and teaching generative AI?

To better prepare students for their post-college careers, faculty and campus leaders are prioritizing education on the tools and capabilities of generative artificial intelligence.

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most disruptive technologies in recent years. To fulfill higher education's mission of equipping students with lifelong skills and learning, faculty across disciplines are bringing AI tools into the classroom.

American University's Kogod School of Business announced in March that it would update all of its curriculum starting in fall 2024, teaching students rapid engineering and programming, as well as coding in R, Python, and AI/ML models. Course content ranges from using AI in real-world situations to applying it in abstract and theoretical ways.

New students are also required to complete AI courses and workshops as part of their undergraduate core curriculum.

Georgia Tech's College of Engineering is overhauling its course offerings to enhance artificial intelligence and machine learning education at the university, with six new courses launching in spring 2024. Most of the courses are major-specific, such as How to Use AI in Civil and Environmental Engineering and How to Use AI in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Some include bioinformatics, but others are more general, such as decision making and data analysis.

AI in research: As artificial intelligence tools develop, Cornell researchers expect AI to become part of the next generation of researchers' toolboxes, so professors will participate in and lead thoughtful discussions about AI. you need to be prepared to do so.
