Human Mobile Devices (HMD) has outlined a series of new features that will be released throughout 2026, aimed at extending the capabilities of traditional feature phones. The company’s upcoming hardware and software updates will focus on integrating the latest digital services, such as financial tools, enhanced communications applications, and artificial intelligence, into simpler and more affordable devices.

The goal of these updates is to provide essential digital services to less connected people around the world, while providing customized solutions for mature markets and older populations.

Built-in digital wallet and secure money transfers

In 2026, HMD plans to introduce a built-in digital wallet designed to enable secure money transfers on feature phones. The service allows users to receive, store, and cash out money using local payment systems.

  • ability: Users will be able to transfer funds directly to their Unified Payments Interface (UPI) account, allowing them to pay for everyday items using their existing infrastructure.
  • safety: This system includes device-level security and PIN protection.
  • partnership: The money transfer service is being developed in collaboration with fintech technology provider Kivi3 and blockchain payments company Polygon Labs.
  • roll out: The initial launch in India is scheduled for the first half of 2026, given India’s position as the world’s largest remittance market and a leader in digital payments. A phased international rollout is planned for later this year.
Video calling and messaging integration

HMD is also expanding communication options on its feature phones by introducing a front-facing camera and a new lightweight application called “Xpress Chat.”

  • Cross-platform connectivity: The Xpress Chat app allows feature phone users to make video calls with friends and family.
  • Messaging features: This application supports voice messages, photo sharing, and group chat.
  • Compatibility: The service is designed to work seamlessly between feature phones and smartphones as long as both devices have the Xpress Chat app installed.
Artificial intelligence integration

HMD is incorporating AI assistants into its feature phone lineup to simplify navigation and extend usability without the need for complex menus.

  • Daily help: Users can perform basic tasks using simple voice commands, such as making phone calls, setting alarms, controlling the flashlight, and asking simple questions. HMD’s recent partnership with Sarvam AI is specifically aimed at bringing locally relevant AI experiences to the Indian market.
  • Companionship for the elderly: In the European market, HMD is partnering with inTouch, a company focused on reducing isolation among older adults, to pilot AI services tailored for older adults. Accessible with the push of a button, this AI is programmed to speak slowly, keep personal history, and have context-aware conversations to support independence and well-being.
Future prospects

HMD says these developments are part of a broader strategy to transform feature phones into a platform for financial inclusion and technological accessibility. The company plans to announce further details in 2026 about product availability, additional partnerships, and specific international expansion schedules.

Commenting on this, Vasili Le Moigne, Founder and CEO of inTouch, said:

We give seniors a sophisticated AI companion in the most familiar interface imaginable: voice, on the simple phone they already trust. We remove barriers to entry so users can pick up their devices and enjoy connectivity. We are excited to work with HMD to support seniors and their loved ones, promoting deeper connections and family well-being.

Jean-François Baril, Chairman and CEO of Human Mobile Devices, said:

At HMD, we believe that innovation is most powerful when technology becomes more accessible and meaningful in everyday life. Our recently announced partnership with Sarvam AI in India is a powerful example of how the local innovation ecosystem is helping shape the future of mobile experiences. Building on our leadership in feature phones, our team is reimagining what these devices can deliver, from AI and communications to financial access and digital services. Today’s announcement marks a significant step forward in bringing smarter, more inclusive innovation to the next billion users.
