Among the myriad announcements at MWC 2026, HMD announced plans to bring the latest smartphone features to its feature phone lineup in the coming months. HMD hopes to expand digital access to less connected users around the world through a suite of features and services, including digital wallets, AI assistants, and video calling. These services are expected to launch in 2026, starting with key markets such as India.

HMD’s digital wallet provides secure transfers to receive, store, and convert funds through local payment systems. The service is expected to debut in India in the first half of this year, with a wider rollout to follow. HMD boasts device-level security with PIN protection and revealed that its digital wallet is being developed in collaboration with fintech company Kivi3 and blockchain company Polygon Labs.

AI is coming into almost every device form factor, and HMD wants to integrate it into its upcoming feature phones. HMD has partnered with India’s Sarvam AI to develop a dedicated AI assistant that allows users to perform certain tasks with their voice. These include basic tasks like making a call, setting an alarm, and turning on your phone’s flashlight, but the HMD also provides an AI chat experience for simple queries.

In addition to the AI assistant, HMD is also introducing a pilot project for an AI companion for elderly users. The service, co-developed with InTouch, will provide a companionship tailored to older users and will begin pilot testing in Europe, followed by a global rollout.

HMD also offers video calling and an improved messaging experience through the new Xpress Chat app. The app allows video conferencing through the front-facing camera and also supports voice messaging, group chat, and photo sharing.
