HD Hyundai, a leading South Korean shipbuilding group, on Thursday announced a partnership with the Ulsan Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) to accelerate efforts to apply artificial intelligence (AI) technology to the shipbuilding industry.

Under the agreement, which involves HD Korea Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and HD Hyundai Robotics, the business group aims to develop “digital strategic assets” for the shipbuilding and maritime industries, according to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Information Communications.

The ministry said at the signing ceremony that HD Hyundai plans to accelerate South Korea’s AI transformation in the manufacturing sector while supporting the government’s efforts to become one of the world’s top three AI powers.

Specifically, HD Gendai and UNIST will develop an AI-based model for the shipbuilding and maritime industries and build a data ecosystem.

“As the shipbuilding and maritime industries face both crises and opportunities, this agreement will provide an important foundation for overcoming challenges and seizing opportunities,” Science Minister Bae Kyung-hoon said in a release.

“The government will spare no effort to ensure that this partnership serves as an example of advancing South Korea’s efforts to become one of the world’s top three AI powers, while aiming for shared growth in the region,” Bae added.

The Ministry of Science said it would support the partnership by removing unnecessary regulations on data collection and use for AI research and development projects.
