JACKSON, Mich. (WLBT) – Mississippi universities have been awarded millions of dollars in grants to boost state AI and machine learning.
On Thursday, Gov. Tate Reeves announced the award. This includes $1.3 million at Jackson State, $1 million at Millsaps University and $723,000 at University of Mississippi.

- Alcorn State University – $1.15 million to train individuals on the fundamentals of digital literacy and AI and deploy telehealth resources
- Belhaven University – $390,000 to hire a dedicated AI program chair and integrate AI content into the MBA curriculum
- Jackson State – $1.3 million to induce on-course programs to engage AI experts and provide real-time industry insights to students. Partnering with Millsaps College to support small and medium-sized businesses with AI integration
- Millsaps College -$1 million to build private investments to establish chairs donated to AI and emerging technologies. Supporting small and medium-sized businesses with AI integration
- University of Mississippi – $723,000 to give lawyers AI, machine learning knowledge by leveraging existing private funds to create a 12-hour certificate and a 6-hour microcredence at the University of Mississippi Law School
- Mississippi State University -$2.2 million to establish contributions for AI and machine learning initiatives. Hire two new teachers. Create a graduate certificate in data center management
- Southern Mississippi University -$1.24 million to establish a Maritime AI Innovation Lab to expand AI into the “Blue Economy.” Includes support for faculty, graduate researchers and AI infrastructure
- Tougaloo College – $1.08 million to introduce new AI and machine learning faculty and establish donations. It is incorporated into all programs to ensure that students give AI “appropriate exposure”
