Google Vids, the company’s video creation platform that utilizes artificial intelligence (AI), has received a major update. In August 2025, the Mountain View-based tech giant expanded its platform to all users, but the ability to generate AI videos from text prompts remained limited to paying subscribers. But the company announced Thursday that anyone can now generate AI videos powered by Veo 3.1 for free. Although the maximum number of free video generations is limited, this update opens up use cases for the platform to free users.
New features added to Google Vids
The tech giant detailed the new features with the update in a blog post. The biggest announcement is that anyone can now generate videos using Veo 3.1 AI models for free. It allows anyone with a personal Google account to generate AI videos up to 8 seconds long using text prompts or image input. Currently, video generation for free accounts is limited to 10 generations per month.
Another big introduction is the custom soundtrack. Powered by Lyria 3 and Lyria 3 Pro models, users can now add AI-generated soundtracks to their clips or entire videos. The company says this will allow users to generate tracks between 30 seconds and 3 minutes in length. However, this feature is currently limited to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers.
Additionally, the company is also adding AI avatars to its platform. When creating anchor-driven clips or videos, paid users can now leverage Veo 3.1 to generate customizable AI avatars with a consistent face and voice. This means that your avatar can not only be used in multiple clips, but also in separate projects without worrying about consistency.
These AI avatars are also highly controllable. Users can place them in specific scenes and have them interact with uploaded objects. You can also adjust the appearance of your avatar. Google says users will be able to adjust details of their appearance, swap out clothing, and change the background as desired.
Finally, the company also makes it easy to create and share video projects on Google Vids. With the new Screen Recorder Chrome extension, users can now record their screen or themselves from anywhere on the web. This completes the entire video creation process in one click.
Similarly, users can now publish their completed videos directly on YouTube. The new export process eliminates the additional steps required to first render, download, and upload the video to a video streaming platform. Additionally, all exports will be private by default, allowing users to preview them before sharing them publicly.
