Google is closing the door to Chrome extensions built to help users bypass AI safety restrictions. This is part of a policy overhaul announced this week for the Chrome Web Store.
The update’s highlight is a new addition to Chrome’s malicious product policy that explicitly prohibits extensions designed to circumvent safety guardrails, usage restrictions, and other protections built into AI-powered services.
Until now, tools sold as a way to unlock unlimited chatbot responses or circumvent usage caps had no clear policy preventing them from doing so, according to Google’s developer blog.
In addition to AI, Google is changing its limited use policy. This means that the data collected by the extension is absolutely necessary to achieve a single purpose. We do not allow developers to collect additional data as it may be related to other features in the future.
Additional amendments will be made to the Disclosure Requirements Policy. This means that even if data collection is essential to achieving the extension’s purpose and has changed after installation, developers must disclose the data collection and notify users about it.
Google also updated its policy on regulated products and services to specifically ban extensions that enable real-money transactions based on predictions, effectively shutting down an area that had become increasingly prominent in the Chrome Web Store but lacked specific policy guidelines.
Google said enforcement will begin on August 1, 2026, giving developers about a month to incorporate current enhancements into their code. Extensions that don’t comply with the new rules will be subject to enforcement action and may be removed from the Chrome Web Store.
