The AI landscape is undergoing major changes as Google (Alphabet) shows exponential growth. The company is taking on OpenAI in a way that emphasizes Wall Street’s perception that Google’s parent company is a prominent leader in AI. This surge has been fueled by huge infrastructure advantages and Gemini’s rapid consolidation, which came at a time when investors thought Gemini was lagging behind rivals.

Yesterday, Alphabet executives adopted a more confident tone, a notable change from when the Gemini 3 model first piqued user interest. Their remarks focused on how AI in 2025 will focus on driving product adoption and increasing revenue, particularly through the cloud computing sector.

“Overall, we see that AI investment and infrastructure is driving overall revenue and growth,” CEO Sundar Pichai said.

Gemini 3 is integrated with “AI mode” within Google’s search engine and powers Google’s corporate edition of Gemini. Predictions for a surge in capital spending initially alarmed investors, sending the stock down as much as 6% in after-hours trading, but a 48% drop in the December quarter and an AI boost across other businesses quickly restored Wall Street’s confidence that Google’s AI bet was starting to pay off.

While OpenAI continues to win multibillion-dollar deals even as it continues to suffer losses, investors are increasingly concerned about whether the company will be able to fund these promises.

“OpenAI’s deal with Microsoft is highly tied to its future ability to raise capital,” said Dan Morgan, portfolio manager at Synovus Trust.

Alphabet’s vast cash reserves have been bolstered by a major deal signed in recent months to provide Meta and Apple with the infrastructure and AI hardware to power them.
