Google removes AI-generated Disney character videos from YouTube, here's why

AI Video & Visuals

In response to legal pressure from Disney, Google has removed many AI-generated videos featuring famous Disney characters from YouTube. The move comes after Disney sent Google a cease-and-desist letter accusing the company of copyright infringement. Dozens of videos reportedly disappeared from YouTube late last week. The video featured popular characters such as Deadpool, Moana, and Mickey Mouse, as well as figures from the Star Wars universe.

Disney's letter accused Google of “massive infringement of Disney's copyrights.” The complaint didn't just focus on YouTube, which hosts the videos. Disney also claimed that Google used Disney-owned content to train its AI models, including Veo and Nano Banana, without permission.

This action shows how seriously Disney takes protecting its intellectual property. The company had previously taken similar steps with other AI platforms. Disney has previously expressed concerns about Character.AI and is currently suing AI image and video companies Midjourney and Hailuo.

However, Disney isn't completely opposed to AI-generated content. Disney recently announced a new partnership with OpenAI. The deal means Disney characters will officially appear in OpenAI's tools, including Sora and ChatGPT. This suggests that Disney is open to using AI technology, provided it is properly licensed and managed. For Google, the takedown underscores the growing pressure on tech companies to be more cautious about copyrighted material. Creating content that uses copyrighted characters without permission can lead to serious legal trouble.
